The purpose of this article is to broadcast among all ATR operators the recommendations issued in EASA Safety Information Bulletin n°2025-04 about the use of the Protective Breathing Equipment (PBE).

Understanding Protective Breathing Equipment

PBE is a vital piece of safety equipment worn by crew members during emergencies to protect them primarily against smoke. It consists of a hood that generates breathable oxygen and removes carbon dioxide from exhaled air. The PBE provides protection for 15 minutes.

PBEs are intended to be used during:

  • Onboard fires, especially in confined spaces like lavatories
  • Smoke events, from an unknown source, while trying to locate the fire.
  • Fume or chemical exposure, involving dangerous goods.

Description of the PBEs installed on ATR aircraft is provided in CCOM chapter 8.2.

Key Concern

Improper use of PBE—such as wearing it beyond its oxygen capacity—can expose users to hypoxia, or even fire hazards due to residual oxygen on clothing or hair.

ATR recommendation

ATR recommends its operators to review their operating manuals and training programs to ensure alignment with the recommendations outlined in EASA SIB n°2025-04.
